Overall Objective of the Project: 

The aim is to improve environmental protection by developing solutions and green technologies for effective cross-border management of marine waste water and hazardous waste generated by cleaning of biological fouling on hulls. In line with the specific objective of the Programme, 2 pilot green technologies will be developed, tested and applied to control, monitor and manage the waste due to the cleaning of the biological fouling on hulls, promoting the development of new economic opportunities in the Programme area and the conservation of the marine environment.

Project summary: 

The common challenge of GreenHull project is solving the problem of pollution by cleaning biological fouling on hulls, thus mproving ships performance and decreasing the halogen species in the environment. The goal of the project is to improve environmental protection by developing innovative green technologies  and solutions for cross-border management of dangerous water and waste. Direct effects are: 2 pilot  innovative green technologies tested by companies for sampling and analyzing biological fouling on hulls during the ship cleaning (multi-sensorial and underwater robotic system, modular purification system). The Project results are useful for companies, research and training institutions, local communities and environmental politicy. Sea has no borders, therefore cross-border cooperation approach in the public and private sector  is necessary in defining guidelines for the monitoring and management of dangerous water and waste and ensures a more effective crossborder management of water and waste. Innovative green technologies are unique solutions allowing further development of new cleaning technologies for dangerous water and waste.

Main results: 

The main result of the project is a strengthened innovation in the control, monitoring and management of waste water and hazardous waste from cleaning of biological fouling on hulls (IBSN). This will be achieved through the development and optimization of experimentation with testing and demonstration, as well as the pilot use of ITV. The construction of two ITV is foreseen allowing the monitoring of underwater cleaning of incrustations and of waste water. Green technologies are an innovative solution to the dangers due to uncontrolled cleaning which can worsen water quality and marine organisms health. The project will contribute to reducing the risk of pollution due to hazardous waste through: cross-border guidelines and strategies to integrate legislation for the management of waste water and waste; cross-border collaboration to monitor environmental risks associated with  hazardous waste and allochthonous species in the sea; development of a model of management system of waste due to ship cleaning, in line with national, EU and international legislation.  The mentioned documents and the new green technologies will allow ships to be cleaned on a scientific basis and in line with environmental legislation, reducing the risk of contamination. Demonstrations to companies and pilot applications of new green technologies are also foreseen to increase the competitiveness of the area. The project will contribute to both indicators of the Priority Axis, i.e. it will increase the level of green technologies tested and performed and contribute to increasing the cross-border application of green technologies and processes.
